How to play charades

Split the room into two teams. The player whose turn it is looks at the card alone, and the clock starts. The goal is to get your teammates to say what is on the card without talking, without making noises, and without writing or spelling anything. One minute is the standard round, though a big group can stretch it to ninety seconds.

Categories and difficulty

Animals and jobs are the easiest decks, because a single gesture usually does the job. Actions sit in the middle, since you have to act out a whole sequence instead of one pose. Movies and TV shows are the hardest: you act the scene, not the title, so hold up fingers for the number of words first, then work through them one at a time.

How the game on this page works

Set up 2 to 4 teams and name them, then choose a category, a round length (30, 60, or 90 seconds), and the number of rounds. The actor holds the phone and taps Got it when the team guesses (+1 point) or Pass on a card that will not work. When the timer ends, the round summary lists what was guessed and play moves to the other team. After the final round, the scoreboard names the winner.
