⏱️ 5 Second Rule

The 5 Second Rule game with 100 cards. Name three things in five seconds — free, no sign-up, straight from your browser.

The rule

Draw a card, read it out loud to the player on your left, and count five seconds. In those five seconds they have to name three answers. Any three that fit — nobody is grading the quality. Get them out in time and you are safe. Freeze, repeat yourself, or trail off with "uhh" and you take the penalty: the group picks a small forfeit, or you simply take a point against you and the first player to three is out.

Why five seconds is so hard

Everyone knows twenty brands of chocolate. Under a countdown you know none of them. That gap between what you know and what you can say while people watch is the entire joke of this game, and it is why the same card can be trivial for one player and impossible for the next. Count out loud and fast — it makes everything worse, in the best way.

Playing with a bigger group

With more than six people, split into two teams and alternate. A correct answer scores for the team, a freeze passes the card to the other side for a steal. You can also run it as a knockout: everyone starts with three lives, lose one per freeze, last player standing wins the round. These 100 cards are enough for a long evening without repeats.

Free and instant

No timer app, no printing, no account. It is one of the fastest group games to start — good for parties, road trips, classrooms, or a table waiting on food — and it plays fine on a single phone passed around the circle.
